China's New Rural Income Support Policy: Impact on Grain Production and Rural Income Inequality AgEcon
Heerink, Nico; Kuiper, Marijke H.; Xiaoping, Shi.
The impact of China's new rural income support policy and recent price trends on grain production and rural income inequality is assessed for two villages with different degrees of market access in Northeast Jiangxi Province. Two village-level general equilibrium models are used to analyze household decision making and interactions between households within these villages. Parameter estimation and model calibration is based on data collected during an extensive survey held in these villages in the year 2000. The household classification used in these models allows us to draw conclusions that are relevant for many other villages and regions in China. Simulation results show that the income support policy does not reach its goal of promoting grain...

Climate Change, Risk and Grain Production in China AgEcon
Holst, Rainer; Yu, Xiaohua; Grun, Carola.
This paper employs the production function-based method proposed by Just and Pope (1978, 1979) to explicitly analyze production risk in the context of Chinese grain farming and climate change, and test for a potential endogeneity of climate factors in Chinese grain production. Our results indicate that China might, at least in the short run, become a net beneficiary of climate change. In particular, we find that increases in annual average temperature increase mean output at the margin and at the same time lead to a reduction of production risk. Further calculations suggest that a 1 °C increase in annual average temperature would entail an economic benefit of $1.1 billion due to the increasing mean output. Furthermore, a Hausman test...

Exploring growth linkages and market opportunities for agriculture in Southern Africa AgEcon
Nin Pratt, Alejandro; Diao, Xinshen.
Considering the heterogeneity of the countries of southern Africa and the presence of South Africa and other middle-income countries in the region, southern Africa has a unique opportunity to exploit agricultural potential and regional trade opportunities through regional dynamics and integration. We analyze the implications of such opportunities for the growth of the low-income countries, using a regional general equilibrium model that captures growth linkages. We find that growth in the middle-income southern African countries, such as South Africa, benefits the region’s low-income countries through increased demand for their agricultural exports. Agricultural productivity growth, however, is necessary for low-income countries to take advantage of South...

Food security based on the spatial temporal feature of grain production AgEcon
He, Yan-fen; Ma, Chao-qun; Yang, Hai-juan.
We use the mean value and variation coefficient model to analyze the spatial-temporal feature of grain production in 31 provinces from the year 1980 to 2006. Time series of grain production is divided into 3 stages according to the average yield and the variation coefficient of grain production in provincial level, which are the lower yield and higher variation stage, the higher yield and lower variation stage and the higher yield and higher variation stage. We classify the grain production of each province into four types according to the grain production level and the annual variation characteristics: the lower yield and higher variation type, the lower yield and lower variation type, the higher yield and lower variation type and the higher yield and...

Prediction of the Productive Capacity of Grain in Henan Province AgEcon
Ren, Xin-ping.
Firstly, status of grain production in Henan Province is introduced. The rapid development of grain production has brought adequate food and clothing for Henan Province, has supported the development of industrial and agricultural production, has maintained the overall stability of the whole society, and has made great contribution to the national food security. Secondly, considering the small sample of research object, the uncertain poor information and the few restrictions on data distribution, the gray forecast is usually conducted by using time series data based on GM(1,1) Model. In order to ensure the high accuracy and the application in practical prediction, residual test is used. Thirdly, according to the grain productive data in Henan Province in...

PUBLIC INVESTMENT AND CHINA'S GRAIN PRODUCTION COMPETITIVENESS UNDER WTO AgEcon
Zhu, Jing; Zhu, J..
China's accession to the WTO poses great challenges to the Chinese agricultural sector, especially to the grain producers. Compared with major grain exporters in the world, most grain crops in China are high in production cost and weak in market competitiveness. This can be partly attributed to the fact that Chinese farmers are facing with poorer agricultural production infrastructures and inadequate public investment in agricultural research and extension, which leads to the lower efficiency in private inputs and thus higher private cost per unit of product. After China joining the WTO, protective and administrative measures conflicted with the URAA cannot be utilized as before. Alternative measures should be explored to provide help to farmers to...

Sources of Agricultural Growth in India: Role of Diversification towards High-Value Crops AgEcon
Joshi, P.K.; Birthal, Pratap Singh; Minot, Nicholas.
This study examines the sources of crop income growth in Indian agriculture over the 1980s and 1990s. Using a method developed by Minot (2003), the analysis decomposes crop income growth into the contribution of yield increases, area expansion, price increases, and diversification from low-value crops to higher-value crops. The results confirm that at the national level, technology (higher yield) was the main source of crop income growth during 1980s, while rising prices and diversification emerged as the dominant sources of growth in agriculture during 1990s. Diversification towards higher-value crops such as fruits and vegetables accounted for about 27% of crop income growth in the 1980s and 31% in the 1990s. However, these national averages hide...

Technical Efficiency of Grain Production in Ukraine AgEcon
Kurkalova, Lyubov A.; Jensen, Helen H..
A stochastic production frontier model with technical inefficiency effects is estimated on a representative sample of Ukrainian state and collective grain-producing farms. Technical efficiency declined from 1989 to 1992. More experienced managers were found to be more productive, with the effect of experience diminishing with age. We found that on-farm provision of production infrastructure was associated with higher efficiency, a result supporting the hypothesis that disorganization causes output to decline in transition economies.
